What is all the fuss about this new Healthy Homes Standards Report?

The healthy homes standards became law on 1 July 2019.

The healthy homes standards introduce specific and minimum standards for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage, and draught stopping in rental properties. All private rentals must comply with the requirements in the timeframe below:

From 1 July 2020

Landlords must include a statement of their current level of compliance with the healthy homes standards in any new, varied or renewed tenancy agreement.

 

From 1 July 2021

Private landlords must ensure their rental properties comply with healthy homes standards within 90 days of any new, or renewed tenancy.
All boarding houses (except Kainga Ora (formerly Housing New Zealand) and Community Housing Provider boarding house tenancies) must comply with healthy homes standards.

 

From 1 July 2023

All Kainga Ora (formerly Housing New Zealand) houses and registered Community Housing Provider boarding houses must comply with healthy homes standards.

 

From 1 July 2024

All rental homes must comply with healthy homes standards.

Our HHS Report

The BRANZ House Condition Survey of 2015 showed that many New Zealand homes are lacking decent insulation, ventilation or heating. Poor quality housing is linked to major health issues in New Zealand such as rheumatic fever and asthma. Homes that have been assessed by a HomeFit assessor is the best way to meet the Healthy Homes Standard statement requirement for your rental property.
